Sam Bradford feeling great; Kiko Alonso out with a concussion

Another day of training camp is in the books for the Philadelphia Eagles. Here’s a recap of the practice with tons of insight from reporters that were at the NovaCare Complex earlier today.

Sam Bradford is looking and feeling good

Head coach Chip Kelly started the day off with a press conference that was flooded with a whole lot of questions about quarterback Sam Bradford. While Kelly said all the right things regarding the team’s likely starting signal caller, Bradford took it upon himself to put on a show during practice.

After being limited and held to only 7-on-7 team drills earlier in the offseason, Bradford has been full-go during training camp thus far. Although he’s had some up and down moments, according to multiple reporters at practice today, Bradford made some impressive throws. Connecting multiple times with second-year wide receiver Josh Huff, which is certainly a good sign for the team. Huff struggled during his first year in the NFL but seems on track to potentially start on the outside in 2015.

Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation detailed one throw which likely has fans excited about the potential of the duo moving forward:

But the good news regarding Bradford continued following practice as he spoke to reporters. While many were worried whether or not Bradford’s knee could hold up during full 11-on-11 drills, he seems to be doing even better than he thought he would be. “I feel better than what I was expecting. I thought my knee would hold up, but I wasn’t sure. But my knee feels great right now,” Bradford told Reuben Frank of CSN Philly.

Kiko Alonso and DeMarco Murray miss practice

Considering both Kiko Alonso and DeMarco Murray have such injury plagued past, it’s going to be concerning when either player misses a practice. But luckily it appears that both should be just fine. Alonso missed practice due to a concussion he reportedly suffered during the team’s open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. Geoff Mosher of CSN Philly thinks Alonso hitting offensive guard Malcolm Bunche full force may have been the cause of the unfortunate injury.

As far as Murray goes, it appears that he was sick today and was sent home, according to multiple reports. That’s worth noting considering he was held out of team drills during the first day of training camp due to his “hydration levels being too high” according to Kelly. Although Murray appears to be one of the team’s more chiseled athletes, he may be having a hard time adjusting to the tempo in Philadelphia. He’ll probably be just fine though but it’s certainly something worth keeping an eye on.

John Moffitt, Eric Rowe get first-team snaps

Throughout OTAs, minicamp and training camp thus far, Matt Tobin looked to be in control of the starting right guard spot and Nolan Carroll appeared to have secured the starting outside cornerback spot opposite of Byron Maxwell. But that doesn’t seem as clear now following today’s practice. Newly signed guard John Moffitt received first team snaps at right guard in place of Tobin and rookie Eric Rowe saw time with the starters in Carroll’s spot as well.

Moffitt obviously has an interesting story due to his short time away from the field to get himself together but he’s a talented player on the field. He offers more experience than any of the Eagles’ options at guard but he isn’t taking Allen Barbre‘s spot at left guard. So his best chance to see the field is at right guard and he’s apparently making an early push for the job. It’s especially worth noting that Moffitt started training camp with the third team and is already working with the starters just days later. That’s quite a leap to make in such a short amount of time.

Rowe getting time with the starters was a bit more unexpected as Carroll has received praise from both coaches and players this offseason. Although there hasn’t been much reported about how Rowe is doing on the field, he certainly has the build and versatility that the Eagles adore in their secondary. It’ll be interesting to see how Rowe does during actual game action during the preseason to see if he can make a real push for a starting job.

That’s all for today’s practice recap, be sure to check back for more throughout training camp!
