Eagles 2015 Preseason Awards featuring PFF grades
The Philadelphia Eagles are creating some buzz this preseason with their performance, dominating all three opponents on their way to a 3-0 record. Obviously, preseason record doesn’t matter at all, but their strong play in all three of their games has shown that they are much improved from last year.
So I think it’s time to give out some awards for how players have done so far, using player grades from Pro Football Focus. Here’s what I came up with…drum roll please!
Best Overall Player Award: Bryan Braman
This one probably comes as a surprise to most people, but this award goes to Braman. He has received a tremendous 8.9 grade over three games, combining his strong performance on both defense and special teams. The highlight of his preseason was probably when he barged into the backfield on a play and suplexed the ball carrier WWE-style. Overall, he has posted four QB hurries, three QB hits, four tackles and just one missed tackle.
Eagles
Worst Overall Player Award: John Moffitt
It’s really a shame that Moffitt won this award because of how much of a turnaround he was making in his career. The bottom line though is that Moffitt has struggled…a lot. He has a -8.3 grade overall and -6.4 on run blocking, a pitiful grade for just three games. He’s allowed five quarterback hurries, tied for the highest on the team thus far. I still think he has a shot to make the team because of his upside, but he hasn’t fully turned it around on the field yet.
“Is He Actually Good?” Award: Ed Reynolds
Everyone remembers the two interceptions that Reynolds had in the first game, earning a 3.3 rating for the game. However, he has been very average the past two games, earning a combined -0.8 grade. Over that two-game span, he has graded negatively in both run defense and pass defense. While it was great that he had the two-interception game, I don’t think it was accurate of his actual ability. Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t end up making the team.
“On Fire” Award: Sam Bradford
In just 32 snaps, Bradford has posted a 3.4 grade, second-highest on the team on the entire offense. His 10-for-10, three-touchdown game against the Packers was what gave him such a high grade for such little play. It’s even more impressive considering he didn’t even play in the first game. This game was an insight into what he can do once the regular season begins.
High grade but won’t make the team Award: Rasheed Bailey
It’s great to see what Bailey is doing, but the wide receivers for the main roster have been pretty much set in stone since the preseason began. I think he has a real shot of making the practice squad though, as he’s looked like the best receiver among the guys who will probably get cut. He’s earned a 2.0 grade in 69 snaps this preseason, good for sixth-best on the offense.
Incredibly average Award: DeMeco Ryans
There’s no chance Ryans gets cut, so this award shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Ryans earned a grade of exactly 0.0 in the 20 snaps he has played this preseason. Other than Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo, who only played 10 snaps before being released, he’s the only player to earn a rating of zero on the Eagles. Keep in mind that negative ratings are possible though, so this isn’t terrible.
Henry Josey Award: Raheem Mostert
I may be copying Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com a bit with this one (his is the “Na Brown Award”), but it’s entirely accurate. Josey looked great last preseason despite being the fifth running back on the depth chart. People thought he would make the roster, only to be disappointed when he was cut. Because, of course, five running backs don’t make the team, and he was racking up yards against fourth-string guys each week. Mostert is the same situation. He has looked good, but there’s no way he makes the main roster despite earning a 0.9 grade, second highest among running backs on the team.
