Eagles must win against the Cowboys on Sunday

After the clock ticked down to zero last Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles were immediately thrust into a must win situation for their next game after a disappointing loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Eagles will be hosting the Dallas Cowboys this coming Sunday and the implications of this game are huge. It’s only the second week of the season, but the Philadelphia Eagles cannot afford to start the season 0-2.

The Atlanta Falcons game was a tale of two halves. The first half was a big ugly mess of miscommunication, failed assignments, blown coverages, and tentative play calling. The second half of Monday’s games was more of the Philadelphia Eagles we saw in the preseason, quick passing, blistering tempo, opportunistic defense, big gains, but it wasn’t enough. If the team had at least played decent in the first half, the Falcons wouldn’t of had a chance.

Philadelphia needs to play like they did in the second half for 60 minutes Sunday afternoon against the division rival Cowboys. The same urgency and fire shown late last week needs to start before the kickoff, not after halftime. Dallas is already 1-0 in the division race after they luckily beat a bad New York Giants team last Sunday. If the Cowboys start 2-0 and both against division foes, this would really put the Eagles behind the eight ball in terms of the division/playoff race.

Philadelphia may have had one eye on the Dallas Cowboys and the other on the Atlanta Falcons last week which may have caused them to overlook a feisty Falcons team. Head coach Chip Kelly needs to get this team back on track because the Cowboys are a better team than Atlanta. Playing one half of good football definitely won’t cut it against a good Dallas team.

The Eagles cannot afford another sloppy start this Sunday. Quarterback Sam Bradford has to get going early as well. The rust and miscommunication was apparent last week, but that can’t be the case this week. The running game also needs to get started as well. If the Eagles can get themselves in a groove early, running and passing the ball while moving the chains, a weak Cowboys defense won’t be able to stop the Eagles.

Starting the season 0-2 isn’t going to ruin a season, that’s foolish if you think so. But an 0-2 start will make a steep climb to a Super Bowl even steeper. If the Philadelphia Eagles come out and handle business like I expect them to, then Philly will be right back on track to win the division and then some.

Last week was either a hiccup in what will be a successful season, or a precursor to how the team will perform in the future. This is a must win situation if you expect to see Philadelphia make a deep run in the playoffs. It starts Sunday, Chip Kelly, Sam Bradford, and the rest of the team need to pull this season back on the right track. It’s time for this team to play up to their elite potential.
