Is There Any Hope For The Philadelphia Eagles?

Is there hope for the Philadelphia Eagles? This has been the question for me personally since the debacle last Sunday. In the heat of the moment I think all Eagles fans were quick to call the season a lost cause. Now that a week has passed and the grieving period is done with, I can honestly say that the Philadelphia Eagles are still in somewhat good shape.

In saying that, the team must prove to me first that I can put more faith in them. Last Sunday was unique for me in the way that I was wholeheartedly embarrassed to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan. The offense last Sunday couldn’t even move the chains against a bad Dallas Cowboys defense.

Quarterback Sam Bradford was missing open receivers and checked the ball down way too often, the offensive line was getting blown up for the second week in a row, receivers were dropping catchable balls all game, and head coach Chip Kelly’s play calling was atrocious. The defense actually played well considering the circumstances, but all in all, it was the worst performance the Philadelphia Eagles have ever put on.

The Eagles have made me feel a lot of things since being a fan, happy, excited, nervous, angry, disappointed, confused, and have even helped me get through tough times, but never in my life, have I been embarrassed to even be a fan of the team until last Sunday. Even after all this, the team actually still has a pretty good chance at winning the NFC East division.

The Dallas Cowboys are riddled with injuries, including their two best players in quarterback Tony Romo and receiver Dez Bryant. Both of whom will miss most if not all of the season. The Cowboys will be relying on QB Brandon Weeden, who has a career record of 5-16, for the rest of season. The Cowboys defense will now have become the focal point of the team, which is a recipe for disaster. The Cowboys are 2-0, but with a tough schedule ahead and a bust at QB, I think I can say that Dallas’ season is over.

Next is the New York Giants. The Giants have been a bad team for the past 5 years. Bad coaching, inconsistent QB play, and a weak defense has kept the Giants in bad shape. The team has done absolutely nothing to correct that. Tom Coughlin is still the coach, Eli Manning is still the QB, and the defense is probably as weak as ever. The Giants will have their ups and downs this season like always.

Lastly is the Washington Football Team. Washington has been the laughing stock of the NFL for a couple years now. It starts from the top to the bottom with Washington. Aside from their offensive team name, the owner Dan Snyder has made terrible football decisions for years now handing out bad contracts and drafting bad prospects, head coach Jay Gruden has the deer in the headlights look as it’s almost impossible to get this team to play well, and to top it off, they have a QB by committee approach. Washington is just a bad team to put it simply.

The NFC East is in shambles right now. Each team has a plethora of diverse issues that make this upcoming season hard to watch. For all the problems the Philadelphia Eagles are facing, the other teams have just as many or more. The Eagles problems can be fixed in my opinion. Execution, play calling, and miscommunication are problems that can be resolved with coaching and further gelling. You can’t fix Brandon Weeden, you can’t fix Washington’s drama, you can’t fix Tom Coughlin. This is a more optimistic approach and some fans might still carry the anger and embarrassment they felt Sunday, I wouldn’t blame you, but things could and probably should be worse for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Even at 0-2, there is still hope for the Philadelphia Eagles considering the state of the NFC East division. I still have faith in Chip Kelly and the Eagles, that faith was rattled and tested Sunday albeit, but the team is still right in the thick of things. Chip Kelly definitely needs to show something more and prove why I was so optimistic before the season. A win on Sunday would be the first step in trying to claw their way back to the top of the division.
