Philadelphia Eagles That Should Be Released
By Regina Ham
While the Philadelphia Eagles have made some big contracts, there needs to be a stopping point.
The Philadelphia Eagles really want to make sure that their players stick around. They’ve had a few big contracts signed over the past week. Linebacker Najee Goode signed a one-year deal earlier this week. Vinny Curry was signed to a new five-year deal and the carefully constructed deal causes very minimal damage to the salary cap. Another name, offensive tackle Lane Johnson, also inked a long term deal with the Eagles. His six-year, $63 million dollar deal runs through 2021 and includes a guaranteed $35.5 million. Tight end Zach Ertz also signed a new deal with the team with $42.5 million for five-years. With all the big money flying around, it might be hard to see how the Eagles have any left in their salary cap. The NFL Draft is around the corner as well as free agency. There are needs that the Eagles need to address. However, in order to spend some of the money, they’ll need to release some players in order to make sure those needs are fulfilled.

Connor Barwin
New defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has a plan up his sleeve. He plans to transition the Eagles from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. That will bode well for some players who have played in both systems, like Malcolm Jenkins. However, it might not be the best system for Connor Barwin. Yes, he does have experience playing in the 4-3 system but that’s not where he’s best used. Barwin is much better as a 3-4 linebacker and that might be found if he is traded to another team. A trade would definitely beneficial for the Eagles if they can get something valuable for Barwin. He’s a strong player and a good leader on the field so it shouldn’t be hard for him to find a new place in the NFL. With Vinny Curry signed to a big deal, it makes more sense to let him go than keep him.
Jason Peters
Jason Peters is one of the biggest names around the Eagles. He’s been a powerhouse for the team in the past and it’s unlikely that he’ll be released. However, he struggled to be healthy in 2015 and was replaced in the Pro-Bowl due to injuries. Peters wasn’t even one of the highest producing tackles for the Eagles last year. Head coach Doug Pederson thinks that Peters do could a lot of good for the Eagles and told the Philadelphia Inquirer that “I think J.P got several good years left in him.” That might be a boost of confidence for Peters from his new head coach but his numbers have suffered. Releasing him would free up $6 million in salary cap and leave more than enough to find a younger, healthier replacement. It’ll be unlikely that he would be gone but if the chance is there, the Eagles might want to take it.

Mark Sanchez
There is no doubt that keeping Mark Sanchez is going to be a topic of debate. He didn’t really have a chance to play under former head coach Chip Kelly and when he did play, he wasn’t performing at a starter level. One of his worst games last season came against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. The Eagles lost 45-14 and it was one of the poorest performance that Sanchez had in his career. The Eagles quarterback situation is dicey at best and it is going to be some times before Sam Bradford makes a decision. Yet the Eagles need to pick up a backup quarterback they can groom in case they lose Bradford or he has a poor season. The NFL Draft could solve that or they could find one in free agency. But when it boils down to it, releasing Sanchez and saving the Eagles $3.5 million. The team could get one million more if they trade Sanchez and it might be in their benefit to do so. Sanchez might excel away from the Eagles and that would be beneficial to both sides.
Regardless of how the rest of the offseason turns out, there will be sacrifices that need to be made. Releasing or trading players would give the Eagles the ability to work with the money they have to make big changes. Whatever happens, it will be a time of change and transition over in the City of Brotherly Love.
