The 2016-2017 season will be bring something new for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles are going to have an interesting offseason. They signed some of their players to long-term contracts, which bolstered some of their needed positions. The issue of quarterback still has to be decided. Rumors have been circulating that Sam Bradford won’t receive the franchise tag. That might give him incentive to leave but the Eagles might be willing to pay what he wants to keep him. Yet a bigger story will be the Eagles new head coach. Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson became the Eagles head coach in January 2016 and it seemed that he was going to be a different type of coach. Pederson quickly made some changes of his own. He hired Frank Reich at the Eagles new offensive coordinator, a move which might be part of Pederson’s grand plan. After the gruffness of Chip Kelly in the Eagles’ office, it is a breathe of fresh air to see Pederson start to form his team.

What that team will look like is still up in the air but one of the biggest questions is how Pederson will run his offense. Former coach Chip Kelly liked to run his offense simply and quickly. A lot of his plays involve the inside zone and he liked to get the ball down the field while spreading a team’s defenses all over a field. Pederson is not going to have the same style of play. The speed that Pederson will run his offense will be much slower than Kelly’s fast-paced tempo. Sometimes that backfired on him but the slower tempo offense might be a benefit for the Eagles. Players will have more time to breathe and not be as fatigued, which was an issues that plagued the Eagles if you watched their focus on the field.

  • Pederson also will also be able to employ the techniques and strategies that his offensive coordinator brings to the table.Their on-field philosophies are similar and there have yet to be disagreements as to how to work with various elements of their squad. Reich laid out ideas of his offense when he spoke with Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia. “You have to be able to impose your will on teams….So in this league you learn that if you try to just have one shtick and say we’re only doing this, you’re going to die.”  Pederson also retained the services of offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland and that might signal what type of blocking scheme the Eagles will use. It’ll depend on if there are any changes to the guards during the offseason and what Pederson looks for in the draft.

The position of quarterback is going to be one of the more interesting part of the offense to watch. Since there is no definite answer to if Bradford is staying in Philadelphia, there is going to be tons of questions. Pederson mentioned at a press conference back in January that he think Bradford would fit well with his offensive style. There is no definite answer of what that is yet it will be hard to see what role Bradford will play or how well he will play it. Bradford went 7-7 as a starter with the Eagles and had 19 touchdowns. Yet he didn’t exactly overwhelm and the latest quarterback acquisition, McLeodBethel-Thompson, hasn’t shown that he’s more than a practice squad candidate.

With all the components yet to fully reveal themselves, it’ll be a matter of time before there is a clear picture of how the Eagles offense will really perform with its new head coach.
