Eagles Draft: Who to Target With the Eighth Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles and their new-old man in charge, Howie Roseman, have been wheeling and dealing this offseason in an unbelievable fashion. Roseman was not only able to unload seemingly horrible contracts, but he was actually able to get something in return.

In one particular deal with the Miami Dolphins the Eagles sent cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso for the ability to move up in the first round. With the eighth pick the Eagles now have the draft stock to get a truly special talent. The question becomes, who should the Eagles draft?

Jared Goff (QB), Cal/Carson Wentz (QB), North Dakota State

Naturally, we are going to hear about the Eagles taking a quarterback now that they have such a high pick. Not only this the wrong decision, but it was be such a waste of a pick that the Eagles might as well not draft in the first round again.

Before we get concerned about the Eagles committing to a young quarterback who does not have an elite ceiling, when they have already committed to two veterans, we can take a breath and see that three teams ahead of us have interest in a QB.

Then again, the Cleveland Browns, are pursuing quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The Dallas Cowboys are only a wildcard and already have a top tier quarterback in Tony Romo. The third team is the San Francisco 49ers and they too are wildcards with Kaepernick already on the roster and with reported interest in quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Myles Jack (LB), UCLA

Myles Jack is the best prospect in this draft. His versatility gives any team a unique talent that they could put at any number of spots and have him lock that position down. When draft day comes there is a serious case to be made for Jack as the number one target for the Eagles.

Ronnie Stanley (OT), Notre Dame

The other top talent for the Eagles is future elite left tackle Ronnie Stanley. Stanley is an unbelievable pass protector and would be able to ideally replace current left tackle Jason Peters without having the Eagles miss a beat. A rare talent like Stanley is impossible to pass on.

Ezekiel Elliot (RB), Ohio State

The more I watch of Ezekiel Elliot the more I fall in love with his talent. Yes, running back is a position that has become less and less valuable and more and more replaceable. That being said Elliot is a rare elite talent at the position whose skill set actually reminds me of all-time great Marcus Allen. He doesn’t have insane speed or power, but he is very good at everything and you will never get a clean hit on him.

Vernon Hargreaves III (CB), Florida

Hargreaves is a question mark for me. Sometimes I watch him and I think that he looks like a future lockdown. Other times, in particular the bowl game against Michigan, Hargreaves just repeatedly continued to get beat and did not even look like an NFL player. The Eagles need a cornerback and the scouts say he’s the best one (if you consider Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey a safety). If Stanley and Jack are gone, he could be worth the risk.

The Eagles have a lot of choices in this draft now that they have moved up. Let’s just hope they make the right one.
