Dorial Green-Beckham Will Make The Pro Bowl This Season
By Matt Giraldi
Newly acquired wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham is going to dramatically improve the Philadelphia Eagles offense in 2016. With a new team and a fresh start, expect big things from the newly acquired Eagle this season.
Dorial Green-Beckham’s understanding of an NFL playbook been questioned. His conditioning has been ridiculed. Yet there he was on Thursday evening. He played for a team he had been a part of for a total of three days. For all the criticism Green-Beckham has faced throughout his football life, he has been given a chance to start new in Philadelphia. A player looking to move past prior transgressions isn’t new for the Eagles. Jeffrey Lurie is a firm believe in rehabilitation.
At 6’5″ and 225 pounds, the Eagles now have a wide receiver to help their mediocre red zone offense. Over the last three seasons, the Eagles have had the 15th, 23rd, and 13th red zone offense. Last season, among quarterbacks that attempted at least 50 passes in the red zone, Sam Bradford had the 5th lowest completion percentage. Of the four receptions for Green-Beckham in the red zone last season, three resulted in touchdowns.

In order to have sustained success in the red zone, the Eagles and their offense needs move the ball down the field. Given Jordan Matthews’ success in the slot his rookie season, it would make the most sense for Doug Pederson to utilize his services in the slot. Outside of Matthews, the depth chart appears extremely volatile. Think 2008 housing market volatile. That volatility could lead to enormous opportunity for the Tennessee cast-off. Green-Beckham has displayed a limited skill-set thus far in his pro career, however NFL.com’s Matt Harmon did his Reception Perception on him prior to last season. The results hinted towards immense upside despite being relatively raw.
There comes a time where potential has to transform into results. Is it after one season? Instant gratification trumps due process however. Consider that Green-Beckham was a 22-year old rookie wide receiver on a team that lost it’s rookie starting quarterback after five games. People want to label “DGB” as an acronym for bust at an alarming rate. This type of logic in the past would prevent us from witnessing players such as Cris Carter and Tyronn Mathieu.

Thus far, Green-Beckham’s presence has already garnered buzz among teammates. Matthews is already aware of Green-Beckham’s physical attributes. He recently likened his physical stature to LeBron James.
One member of the Philadelphia sports media feels that Matthews would be burdened by the responsibility of being a mentor to Green-Beckham. If Matthews ever wants to sniff greatness, he needs to make those around him better. Matthews has flashed potential, but even he is far from a sure thing. So for once, I agree with a hot take from Eliot Shorr-Parks.
Once again, volatility is the name of the game for the Eagles wide receivers. From the performance on the field to the depth chart itself, the receivers haven’t shown consistency. Hope springs eternal though. Green-Beckham and Matthews have the ability to create match-up nightmares for opposing secondaries. Pessimists have continued to focus on the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2014 season where the team did not have a wide receiver score a touchdown. Optimists will instead point to Jeremy Maclin’s season as an outside receiver in 2015. With Matthews returning to the slot, Green-Beckham could quickly turn into Bradford’s favorite target on the outside.
For those of you still doubting whether the two could form a connection, Jonathan Kinsley did some in-depth research about Bradford’s deep ball accuracy. In the event Green-Beckham shows even the slightest bit of rapport with Bradford, it’s within reason to believe that the Eagles could have their first Pro Bowl receiver since DeSean Jackson in 2013. I see a bright future in Philadelphia for Green-Beckham and if you ask me, that’s going to happen sooner than anyone expects. The only remaining question is whether both Matthews will join Green-Beckham in Orlando for the Pro Bowl.
