Eagles news: Chris Long shows his support to Charlottesville, Virginia
In the wake of the tragic events that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia Eagles, defensive end Chris Long wants to help give back to his home town.
In the wake of the violent and tragic events that have occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, many have done a great job of stepping up to help and show their support. Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long is no exception. He’s a native of the city, and he’s doing everything he can to join the fight to restore some normalcy.
Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured as a car plowed into a group of people protesting a white nationalist rally. Saturday night, Long tweeted the link to a GoFundMe site that he set up to raise money for the victims, and their families.
Take a look:
Long has been both emotional and candid in his statements:
"I’ve been lucky to be given a lot through this great game – money, resources, opportunities. I think the bare minimum as an athlete is to give back. I don’t think it’s anything that anyone should be applauded for, I think that’s my responsibility."
Long spoke to members of the Philadelphia media following practice on Sunday.
"It’s been tough. When a situation like that arises, because it’s in my hometown, people don’t want to hear silence. People don’t want to see people stand idly and watch stuff like that happen"
A classy individual:

Long, a class act, is no stranger to giving back or using his platform and influence to create change. It’s in his blood to do so. In the 1980s, he appeared as an infant in an anti-underage drinking public service announcement with his parents. It’s common knowledge that he’s the son of NFL Hall of Fame inductee Howie Long. That campaign started him on the right path, and it’s continued ever since.
In May of 2015, he launched the Chris Long foundation. One of its’ causes is raising money for the Waterboys Initiative, a program dedicated to building wells for communities in East Africa.
He’s a great guy and one heck of a football player, but it’s acts like these that people need to know more about. People like Mr. Long deserve a little credit from time to time.
