The Eagles have placed both Alex McCalister and Tre Sullivan on injured reserve.

After trimming their roster to the league-mandated 53 men and adding ten men to their practice squad, the Philadelphia Eagles had to be given credit for something. They had managed to hold on to just about everyone who was a key contributor during the preseason. They had a healthy mix of both draft picks and projects who were worth keeping around.

There were running back battles. When it was all said and done, Philly decided to keep both Corey Clement and Donnel Pumphrey. There were over abundances of talent at key spots, defensive end for example. We knew who some of the shoo-ins were. That left guys like Steven Means and Alex McCalister fighting for their roster lives.

The Eagles granted Means an extension. McCalister wasn’t as lucky.

It was believed that McCalister may find his way to the practice squad. Unfortunately, there were only ten available spots. Keeping Nathan Gerry and Bryce Treggs and Billy Brown among others meant McCalister and another of his teammates who made waves during the preseason, safety Tre Sullivan, would be forced into football limbo.

Rumors ensued. Some figured the Eagles would use the injuries suffered by Pumphrey and Gerry as a reason to add them to the injured reserve list. Using a couple of “phantom” injuries would allow Philly to hold on to two more of their guys. Then, Pumphrey made the active roster and Gerry made the practice squad, causing those rumors to subside a little.

Well, we’ve learned we may have been on the right track in that theory after all. The Eagles will, indeed, stash a couple of guys on IR. Guess who they are. If you selected Alex McCalister and Tre Sullivan, give yourselves a pat on the back.

The story was released by a team staffer and later confirmed by Phillyvoice.com.

What this means:

McCalister and Sullivan both suffered injuries in the final preseason game against the New York JetsPlacing them on injured reserve means both remain under team control but don’t count against a roster spot. Both will also be right back in the mix next offseason when it’s time to start building a roster again.
