ESPN has released the Week 6 power rankings and the Philadelphia Eagles are favorites.

It has been quite a while since the Philadelphia Eagles were able to take the field past Week 17. They haven’t won a playoff game since 2008 when they lost to the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game. Their most recent appearance came in 2013 when former head coach Chip Kelly brought his ‘innovative’ new offense to Philadelphia. Clearly, things didn’t work out with that one. Now, its time for Doug Pederson to show the NFL that he is more than capable of making a run with this team.

As the Eagles come off of an impressive 34-7 victory over the Cardinals, they continue to gain respect from the analysts. Just last week NFL Network analysts listed the Eagles as a top-five contender in the NFL. This week, ESPN did, just about, the same thing. Out of 32 teams, the Eagles have improved from the eighth spot to number four after they took care of the Cardinals in blowout fashion. Are they a legitimate contender though?

It may be a little premature to start talking playoffs already, but would it be football season without a little overreaction involved? Sitting at the top of the NFC East division with a 4-1 record is a lot better than it seems. The Eagles have already beaten two of their three division rivals and won two of their three games on the road. They head into a Thursday night contest to play a tough Carolina Panthers team which will become a statement game for the Eagles.

With their current record, the Eagles have an 86-percent chance of making the playoffs, according to ESPN. That makes them the favorite in the entire NFC Conference. The next team listed in the NFC just so happens to be their opponents for this week. If the Eagles beat the Panthers on Thursday Night Football this week, they may establish themselves as the dominant team in the entire Conference.

Obviously, it will be tough for both teams this week as they are on limited time to recuperate from last Sunday.  But Thursday will be the second biggest test for the Eagles this season. If they can pull out a tough conference win against the Panthers on the road, they will officially be the team to beat in the NFC.
