According to reports, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is going to take any suspension to his star running back Ezekiel Elliott lying down.

If you’re sick of hearing about the back-and-forth banter surrounding the suspension of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, you’re not alone. Sometimes, you can almost forget that there are games to play. Especially when you’re always hearing about protests, suspensions and even issues in the Papa John’s franchise. Either way, the circus surrounding Elliott’s suspension now has a new component. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is playing the role of de facto ringmaster. He’s, reportedly, threatened to sue the NFL and a few of his fellow team owners if league commissioner Roger Goodell‘s contract is extended.

Some of you probably knew something of this nature would transpire. This is, of course, Jerry Jones. Things have normally gone his way. You’ve probably heard another theory for quite some time. That theory is the league may actually be run by Jones, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and a few of the other of the high-ranking team owners.

Still, it’s Goodell who has, in title, been given the reigns. It’s Goodell who rakes in the $40 million salary for the league’s success.

A messy story gets even messier.

More from Inside the Iggles

Most of us got word of the news when the New York Times released an excellent expose on Wednesday. Jones, who’s already expressed his dissatisfaction with the national anthem protests isn’t happy with Goodell. As mentioned, most of this stems from the impending suspension of his star running back Elliott.

Then again, one of the league’s biggest and most well-known sponsors, Papa John’s recently stated their numbers have taken a hit as well. Could some of Jones’ frustration also lie in the fact that he owns a number of franchises?

It’s not really out of the realm of possibility.

Last week, Jones informed six owners on the league’s compensation committee that he hired David Boies. The name should sound familiar. He’s also handling the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment case. Researching several media outlets has led to dead ends as no one’s really released any statements. A spokesman for Boies’ law firm has referred all questions to the Cowboys.

Can we just play football already?

Apparently, Elliott’s suspension is a matter of when, not if. The Cowboys are the next step in the Philadelphia Eagles journey through 2017, and if Elliott isn’t on the field, Dallas may be at a disadvantage. In all honesty, there’s only one negative if you’re an Eagles fan. If the Eagles rattle off another victory, Cowboys fans will, no doubt, use Elliott’s absence as the excuse. That’s despite the fact that Philly’s had their number, for the most part, in recent years.
