Alshon Jeffery is starting to think about his future with the Philadelphia Eagles.

When the Philadelphia Eagles signed the veteran wide receiver, Alshon Jeffery, they expected a true number one receiver. Although he was offered a multi-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, he opted to take a gamble on himself and sign a one-year deal with the Eagles. At first, it was a strange deal for the Eagles to make. But in retrospect, it was a safe move for both parties. If Alshon under-performs, the Eagles have no worries about wasting money. But if he outdoes himself, he will be expecting a big payday, either here or elsewhere.

Through ten games of the 2017 season, Jeffery is finally starting to click in the Eagles offense. Since the beginning of the season, plenty of fans were skeptical about Jeffery’s production. In fact, even up to this point he has yet to surpass 100 yards in a single game. Aside from two games, he doesn’t even have five receptions.

So Alshon may not be the receiver the Eagles thought they were getting. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though. Let’s face it, without Jeffery on the field, opposing defenses would not be as concerned with the Eagles passing game. Simply having the presence of Alshon has created a world of opportunities for other weapons in the passing game. So that doesn’t necessarily make him a number on the receiver. But it does make him productive in the system whether it is him catching the ball or someone else.

How does the future play out?

Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal caught up with Jeffery on Tuesday afternoon to discuss some things about the team. When Frank asked him about his future with the Eagles, Alshon made it clear that he is happy and would like to stay here. So everything sounds spectacular, right? Not quite. He added on that he would rather focus in on the game and leave the contract talks to his agent.

That all makes sense when you consider that Alshon has to stay focused on the current task at hand, which is playing football. But it doesn’t really help that he is leaving the numbers up to his agent. The truth is, when big-name players sign a one-year deal fresh out of free agency, it turns into a gamble. Alshon’s goal was to prove that he is worth the big bucks after his “trial” season.

We’ve seen it before with former Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin. Obviously, Maclin’s big season got him a nice paycheck. Unfortunately, it was outside of Philadelphia, though. There is hope that Jeffery stays put in Philadelphia, but leaving the decision ultimately up to his agent could change the outcome. Considering that the Eagles do not have much wiggle room with their salary cap, they might run into some issues during the 2018 offseason. One thing is for sure though, they could use Alshon next season.
