The Philadelphia Eagles will be facing a familiar face twice a season now.

As the NFL playoffs continue to roll on, eliminated teams are looking ahead to the future. Some teams are preparing for their next round of selections in the Draft. Others are focusing on hiring the next head coach of their football team. For the Philadelphia Eagles NFC East rivals, the New York Giants, they are looking to find their next head coach for 2018 and beyond.

Just like any other season, many rumors have been flying around about who might coach the Giants. Two weeks ago, it was speculated that Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz could get a shot. But then just last week it was announced that New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was the favorite.

After ruling out Schwartz, it looks like the Giants have changed their mind and shifted their focus to a familiar face of the NFC East. Apparently, the Giants are looking to hire former Eagles offensive coordinator and current offensive coach of the Minnesota Vikings, Pat Shurmur.

The News:

Shurmur returns to the East…

Pat Shurmur spent a couple years in Philadelphia as the offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly. When the Eagles decided to let go of Kelly, Shurmur ended up filling in for the final game of the 2015 season. Ironically enough, that is when the Eagles defeated the Giants 35-30 in a meaningless Week 17 game.

Unfortunately for Shurmur, the Eagles chose not to bring him back as the team’s head coach. The Eagles elected to hire Doug Pederson who would choose not to retain Shurmur as his offensive coordinator. Shurmur then packed up and went to Minnesota where he is thriving as an offensive coach.

The success of the Vikings allowed Shurmur to get recognized as a legitimate option to lead a team. If and when the Giants do decide to hire him, the Eagles will be playing against a familiar face not once, but twice a season. It’s probably a good thing that he was gone before the Pederson era. Therefore Shurmur is not as familiar with the Eagles system from the inside. It will be fun to watch the rivalry continue on for years to come.
