Just as they’ve done all season, the Eagles named honorary captains for the NFC Championship Game, and that honor will go to both Brian Dawkins and Wilbert Montgomery.

Well, the day has finally come, and it’s a day Philadelphia Eagles fans may or may not have been expecting. Their favorite NFL team has found their way into the NFC Championship Game. It will an emotional day and game no doubt, and before this one even kicks off they’ll be given yet another reason to be excited. Brian Dawkins and Wilbert Montgomery will take the field as honorary captains.

Dawkins has been on the minds of Eagles fans for quite some time now as he’ll probably be the next member of the Eagles who finds his way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Recently, he offered a passionate call to arms that preceded Philly’s game versus the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round of the playoffs.

If you missed it, it’s definitely worth a look. Truthfully, it kind of applies for this game as well.

Take a look.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane.

More from Inside the Iggles

Wilbert Montgomery is the owner of one of the great highlights in Eagles history. If you’re a fan you’ve seen his dash into the end zone in the only NFC Championship Game ever hosted at Veteran’s Stadium. It was a game that resulted in a 20-7 victory over the hated Dallas Cowboys.

Montgomery’s legendary run came early, but even though the over three quarters still needed to be played on that day, that moment just gave you a sense that the game was over. For his career, Montgomery amassed 6,789 yards on 1,540 carries, and he caught 273 passes for another 2,502 yards.

Montgomery would go on to score 57 touchdowns (rushing and receiving) as a player. He’s a two-time winner of the Super Bowl as a coach. The first time came as a running backs coach with the Saint Louis Rams. There, he served as a former assistant to Dick Vermeil, his old coach in Philly. The second time came in Super Bowl XLVII, when he also served as a running backs coach, this time for the Baltimore Ravens.

Both Dawkins evoke a wide range of emotions for Eagles fans, but even though their presence on Championship Sunday won’t be a surprise, don’t expect Lincoln Financial Field to be silent when they’re introduced. Expect a raucous crowd. Expect a determined Eagles team. We’ll see if the presence of their honorary captains will be enough to will them to victory.
