It appears that former Philadelphia Eagles Josh Huff and Paul Turner will get another shot to play in the NFL.

Players come and go in the NFL. That’s just the nature of the business. One thing’s certain. If you ever bring up Josh Huff or Paul Turner in a conversation with a Philadelphia Eagles fan, you’re not going to have to do much to jog that fan’s memory about either player.

Huff and Turner are both examples of so many characteristics in today’s NFL. For Turner, it was about being the long shot. He may not have possessed many of the same physical gifts that his peers did, but he made the best of an opportunity quite a few people would kill for. For Huff, it was never a story of not having the athletic ability. He would have to learn that, in a league full of amazing athletes, that just isn’t enough.

Here’s a quick history lesson.

Huff was the guy that came into the league and was a little more recognizable. To the Eagles fan, he was yet another mistake made by former head coach Chip Kelly. At that time, Kelly seemed to be going though a phase of trying to turn the Eagles into a professional version of one of his Oregon Ducks teams.

Huff, a former pupil of Kelly’s in Eugene, was drafted in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft, 86th overall. Turner was an undrafted free agent who was signed in 2016 and quickly became a favorite.

Seen as a long shot to make the roster, Turner routinely made ‘wow’ plays from the wide receiver position. Keep in mind this was during a time when wide receiver was one of the problem areas on the Eagles roster. Turner would be waived but signed to the team’s practice squad a day later. That was probably thanks, in part, to a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown that he delivered in the final preseason game.

A new dawn awaits.

Turner would be promoted to the active roster in November of that year. His second attempt at making the Eagles roster came to an end on September 1st of 2017. For his career, he has nine receptions for 126 yards. Huff, who was released by Philly on November 3rd following an arrest that was partially due to having marijuana and a firearm in his vehicle, has tallied 51 receptions for 523 yards. He’s also added 1,182 yards to his resume in the return game, and he’s reached the end zone six times in his career.

Both are signed to reserve/future contracts. As of now, they’re seen as having minimal chance to make the Saints roster, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
