The following is, in no way, meant to be disrespectful to Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. He’s definitely earned his wings.

Following the decision by the Philadelphia Eagles to restructure one of the most expensive deals on their books, the one belonging to right tackle Lane Johnson, their plan to get under the NFL-mandated $177.2 million salary cap is beginning to come into focus. Some key pieces are going to be allowed to leave. Guys like Johnson and, maybe, left tackle Jason Peters will attempt to be re-worked. It didn’t work out a season ago with Peters, but who knows? That brings us to Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins.

Thanks to Johnson and what appears to be a pretty large exodus of both expensive and key players, the Eagles will certainly get under that high salary cap number. They might be able to be more aggressive than most of us believed they could be. The plan, at one point, was to restructure defensive end Vinny Curry. Then, it appeared that idea went cold. Maybe it didn’t, but we definitely haven’t heard about it that much. Here’s a question no one seems to be asking.

What about the contract belonging to Malcolm Jenkins?

Let’s look at some numbers.

More from Inside the Iggles

Jenkins represents a $28.9 million cap hit over the next three seasons. In 2018 alone, he has a base salary of $8.5 million and a bonus due of $1.5 million according to Spotrac. If Jenkins hasn’t done anything else, he’s proven he’s earned those wings on his helmet. You’ll never again be able to tell the story of the Eagles without mentioning his name.

He’s a huge part of their Super Bowl story. He’s a leader both on and off the field. No one will ever debate he’s one of the best people to walk through the Eagles organization.

There’s no question he deserves to retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. With that being said, why not restructure his deal and spread the money he’ll be making over a longer span than the three years he has left on his current contract?

It’s worth thinking about right? Picture the Eagles restructuring Johnson, Peters, Curry and Jenkins. Think about the current roster with ‘The Birds’ now having a little coin to go spend in free agency.

It, sort of, makes the mouth water.
