Philadelphia Eagles: Can we expect less Nick Foles in the preseason?
With what seems like ten quarterbacks on the Philadelphia Eagle roster, it’s a good chance we won’t see Carson Wentz or Nick Foles much during the preseason.
It’s quite a luxury to have the man that would have been the NFL‘s MVP as your franchise quarterback and a Super Bowl-winning quarterback as the backup. Such is the case with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. Throw in Nate Sudfeld, who they’re also in love with, and ‘The Birds’ are quite comfortable with their quarterback room.
Then, in typical Howie Roseman fashion, Philly’s vice president of football operations turned his attention to adding depth. Now, with six quarterbacks on the roster and an unquestionable desire to get more in-game snaps for Sudfeld, the question is simple. How will Philly juggle playing time for all of these signal callers?
Let’s examine.
It’s safe to say Jeremiah Briscoe, Brandon Sievers and Joe Callahan‘s chances of making the Eagles roster are slim and none, so why are they here? Jeff Kerr of 247Sports.com believes, with a phenomenal preseason, Sudfeld could actually work his way into the second position on the depth chart. While most would disagree with that theory (Foles is more experienced and, again, the reigning Super Bowl MVP), one can never tell.

You’re all very aware of what’s going on with Wentz. No one’s going to risk further injury to the franchise quarterback by rushing him back to health. We sort of thought that meant the goal would be to give Foles the starter’s reps in practice. Could that still be the goal, or could we be in for a ton of Briscoe, Sievers, Callahan and Sudfeld in the preseason?
At least we have the top of the depth chart figured out.
Philly already knows what they have with their top-two signal callers. Then again, whoever the starter is, he’ll definitely need some work in August so that he’s ready by September 6th.
There are a ton of scenarios here. Wentz could sit out of the entire preseason and be back for the regular season opener. He could also miss the opener if he’s still in the middle of the healing process. Then, there’s ‘Saint Nick’. Foles could sit out a lot to give Sudfeld more opportunity.

One of the three guys Philly picked up after the 2018 NFL Draft could have a strong showing in the preseason. That could help him find his way onto the practice squad (likely) or maybe work his way into the 3rd spot on Philly’s depth chart for QBs (highly unlikely). Who would have thought we’d be talking position battles as they relate to quarterbacks?
Whatever happens, we’ll have to wait and learn together. Still, with Philly already knowing what they have with Wentz and Foles, don’t be surprised if you see them less. That should allow Philly to evaluate the other guys they’ve brought in.
