Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett is expected to be 100 percent following a recent medical procedure that no one really knew he had.

Well, we’ve long removed the term ‘rookie’ from Derek Barnett‘s name. The Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive end continues to familiarize himself with life in the NFL. Injuries are a part of the game, and shortly after, arguably, the biggest win in team history, Super Bowl LII, Barnett had a corrective measure to repair one of his own.

Early Saturday morning, Jimmy Kempsi of PhillyVoice.com reported that he had gathered from a source that Barnett had surgery to repair a sports hernia. Is it us or have ‘The Birds’ mastered the art of covertly keeping injuries in house? If you’ll remember, we learned earlier this offseason that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery had played the 2017 season and the Philly’s postseason run with a torn rotator cuff.

There’s been no talk of either missing the preseason. Yes, that’s still a few months away, but things are looking positive.

So, how is Barnett in terms of recovery?

Judging by the timetable everyone seems to be using, the healing process for Barnett should have only been somewhere around six weeks. We’re well past that now. That means the hope is everything should be good on that front.

According to Kempsi, surgery should also make that portion of Barnett’s body stronger.

Now, if Philly can just get Carson Wentz, Timmy Jernigan, Darren Sproles, Jordan Hicks and Chris Maragos in good playing condition, all will be right with the world.

Here’s a quick look back and ahead.

The Eagles are expecting a lot from Barnett in his sophomore campaign. The Eagles lost one defensive end (Vinny Curry) and gained another (Michael Bennett). No one’s certain about whether or not the latter will be available for the start of the regular season, if he’s available at all.

Barnett was the 14th-overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s also the Tennessee Volunteers‘ all-time leader in sacks. The hope of every Eagles coach and fan is that translates to the professional level. If it does, we could be watching the growth of one of the great young defensive talents in the league for the next few years.
