The Philadelphia Eagles strengthen their group of linebackers with the addition of undrafted rookie linebacker Kyle Wilson.

After losing two linebackers in what seemed like 15 minutes (Paul Worrilow and Mychal Kendricks), the Philadelphia Eagles strengthened what now seems like a bear cupboard. It came in the form of the addition of Arkansas State Red Wolves standout Kyle Wilson.

Wilson, as you know, would go undrafted. Then, he earned an opportunity to attend the Eagles rookie minicamp early in May. One might assume he was a little disappointed after being overlooked for the 90-man roster about a week or so ago. He’s stayed the course. Now, with Worrilow and Kendricks gone, he’ll get yet another chance to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster.

There’s still a huge hill to climb.

Teams just don’t carry as many linebackers as they used to. Though teams still employ 3-4 or 4-3 sets in their base packages, we’re seeing NFL offenses employing three-wide receiver sets (or four) more and more often in an attempt to ‘open the game up’ or to create mismatches.

That means, more and more often, we’re seeing two linebackers (or less) on the field for NFL defenses. It isn’t a dying position, but teams are carrying fewer linebackers on the active roster. Philly will enter the preseason with LaRoy Reynolds, Asantay Brown, Corey Nelson, Nigel Bradham, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Joe Walker, Jordan Hicks, Nathan Gerry and, now, Wilson.

We know everyone won’t be here at the start of the regular season, but we also know Hicks and Walker have shown a propensity to be fragile. Keep an eye on this one. Wilson could be mentioned a lot from now until the end of August.
