If the Philadelphia Eagles are going to be among the best in the NFL, they’ll need to stop drawing the penalty flags from the referees.

After two three weeks of the 2018 NFL season, we can state, with confidence, that the Philadelphia Eagles are among the best teams in professional football. They’ve shown a ton of perseverance in spite of the fact that they’ve entered every game without many of their best players.

Their quarterback, Carson Wentz, just got back Sunday. When he stepped on the field, he had to have felt as though he was in a time warp of sorts. One of his favorite targets from a year ago, Alshon Jeffery, was missing.

His good friend and one of his most reliable targets from his rookie season, Jordan Matthews, was back, but Darren Sproles and Jay Ajayi were both gone. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s just what Philly’s been dealing with on offense. Does anybody have any clue where Timmy Jernigan is or when he’ll be back?

Philly’s making things hard for themselves.

At this point, arguing about who’s here and who isn’t is a mute point. It’s the NFL, and every team is beaten up. You have to win with what you have. This is a point that isn’t lost on the Eagles or their fans, especially after the 2017 season.

That isn’t going to be Philly’s biggest issue though. With an ever-improving NFC and teams like the Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints looking to punch their ticket to Super Bowl LIII at season’s end, the one thing the Eagles can’t do is beat themselves.

Despite a 2-1 record, that appears to be exactly what they’re trying to do. After seeing 110 yards marched off in the wrong direction on Sunday, the Eagles left Lincoln Financial Field as the league leaders in penalty yardage with 266.

Jalen Mills, who’s taken a lot of criticism over the last two seasons, didn’t help the cause by aiding the Indianapolis Colts with 51 yards in pass interference penalties.

Great teams can’t beat themselves.

After hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February, we all were aware of one thing. The ‘Birds’ were going to get everyone’s best shot in 2018.

A 2-1 record after three weeks is just about as good a record as you can ask for considering the circumstances, but if they’re going to get a shot at another Super Bowl appearance, or even a playoff berth, they’ll need to stop drawing the yellow laundry.

It’s going to be hard enough to beat the other teams in an improving NFC anyway. You can’t give so many good teams extra opportunities.
