The Black College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2019 will include former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Hugh Douglas.

This past Wednesday seemed like it was just like any other for former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Hugh Douglas. He pulled into the parking lot at Atlanta’s 92.9 The Game. He walked into the studio for his show, but it wasn’t until he’d start broadcasting that he’d get a call with some rather unexpected news.

The Black College Football Hall of Fame gave him a buzz to inform him he’d been added to their Class of 2019.

Let’s take a quick look back.

More from Inside the Iggles

Douglas played his college ball for the Central State Marauders before being drafted in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

Most of you remember him for two stints in Philly (1998 to 2002 and 2004), but here, at ITI, we’ll always remember his sack and forced fumble on former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Shaun King in the Wildcard Round of the 2000-01 NFL Playoffs.

That moment shifted the momentum in the favor of the Eagles, and they would go on to win by a score of 21-3. The great Merrill Reese once said that was the loudest he had ever heard a crowd for an Eagles game.

While at Central State, he won a national championship. That was the crowning achievement of a collegiate career in which he recorded 32 sacks in three seasons. He was also a two-time NAIA Division I All-American.

During his time in the NFL, Douglas recorded 352 tackles, 80 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, an interception and a defensive touchdown. 54-and-a-half sacks came in an Eagles jersey. That places him fourth in that category on the team’s all-time list.

We, at ITI, would like to congratulate Hugh Douglas on this well-deserved honor.
