A former NFL great can’t get ‘Zeke’ in his top three.

Former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis made an appearance on ESPN’s First Take this morning. Stop what you’re doing and listen to this.

It needs to be said again. If any of those guys played for the Cowboys, you’d be attacked if you said they weren’t the best running backs in pro football. You know it. So does everybody else. There’s some validity to what Portis said. Here are four running backs who are better than Elliott. We’ll start with the two most obvious.

1. Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams

Last year, in the most important game of the Cowboys’ season, ‘Zeke’ watched as a superior talent at the position, Todd Gurley, outgained him by 68 yards while carrying the ball four fewer times. Elliott was supposed to be the guy who was healthier. Elliott is believed by just about everyone as having the superior quarterback, yet, when the lights shone the brightest, Gurley was the guy and ‘Zeke’ wasn’t.

Most importantly, his Los Angeles Rams knocked ‘America’s Team’ out of the playoffs.

Elliott finished with 47 yards on 20 attempts. Gurley racked up 115 yards on 16 carries. Elliott, also seen as the bigger breakaway threat’s longest carry of the night was 15 yards. The banged-up Gurley’s best effort was 35 yards (and you thought ‘Zeke’ had the better burst). Let’s move on to a division rival.
