Philadelphia Eagles pretty much admit Sidney Jones is a bust
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson casually reveals on Monday morning that cornerback, Sidney Jones, is pretty much a bust.
Just this past week, many fans (and even a player) have expressed their disappointment towards the general manager, Howie Roseman, because of his recent draft picks. As the 2019 NFL Draft class continues to underperform this year severely, his last few classes haven’t looked so hot as well.
Back in 2017, the Philadelphia Eagles made a controversial pick in the second round. They elected to go with Washington cornerback, Sidney Jones. While Jones was viewed as one of the top defensive back prospects in that class, he just suffered a ruptured Achilles the month before he was expected to get called up to the podium during the first round of the draft.
While Jones fell to the second round because of his mishap, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to give the young man a chance. Therefore, they drafted him in the second round, even though the Eagles knew he wouldn’t contribute too much during his rookie season.
Last year, Jones made his starter’s debut at nickel cornerback during the first week of the season, and he looked decent. However, just a few games in, the former second-rounder suffered a hamstring injury. After eventually returning for a couple of games, Jones went back out with the same issue, which ended his 2018 season.

By then, the questions were already rolling in regarding Jones. We wouldn’t jump to slap the ‘bust’ label on him just yet, but now might be the time to do so. After coming into the 2019 season as a backup, Jones only got playing time when Ronald Darby got hurt. At that point, Jones ended up suffering yet, another hamstring injury himself as he filled in for Darby.
Jones didn’t miss any games because of the injury setback — but he didn’t really see the field either. Against the Jets, Jones suited up but didn’t play. Against the Vikings, Jones started but was benched at a certain point, which went unnoticed for a little while. Then against the Cowboys this past Sunday, Jones didn’t play at all once again, and the media questioned it.
Was Sidney Jones healthy on Sunday? Eagles’ head coach Doug Pederson not only confirmed that Jones is not injured, but he also confirmed that the third-year cornerback is buried way deep on the depth chart. Right now, there are four cornerbacks ahead of Sidney Jones on the depth chart.
That includes guys like Orlando Scandrick (signed two weeks ago) and Craig James (promoted from the practice squad). Pederson won’t come right out and say it, but at this point, there’s no way to defend Sidney Jones. He is what he is — a second-round bust. If he can’t get on the field over Scandrick or James, then there’s no way he can beat out Cre’Von LeBlanc or Avonte Maddox when they are healthy. The Jones experiment is declared over and his days in Philly are numbered.
