Byron Jones and 2 other free agents Eagles must consider signing
The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t had a ton of recent success when they’ve picked up former members of the Dallas Cowboys, but a very serious case can be made for why they should fork over the cash to acquire Byron Jones. He turns 28 at the beginning of the 2020 season, but he also has the athletic ability that the Eagles have been lacking in the secondary.
Jones ran a 4.36-second forty-yard dash when he came out of college, and with his six-foot-one frame, he’s a nice combination of size and speed. Before the 2015 NFL Draft, Jones had been linked to the Eagles and it was well known that they wanted to draft him. Unfortunately, the Cowboys beat them to the punch as they took him late first round.
The Eagles appear to have found satisfies their slot cornerback position as the mixture of Cre’von Leblanc and Avonte Maddox has paid huge dividends. The next step should be finding a true number one cornerback on the outside to limit the big plays, and Jones is a good player that can help this defense’s issues with speed.
The potential loss of both Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby further the need to improve on the outside. Jones may carry a potential price tag of $12 million at minimum, but if the Eagles feel he can solidify the secondary, it’s a move that needs to be made.
