NFL free agency: Grades for each Eagles roster move through Week 1
In all honesty, this was one of those things that kind of caught us all off guard. A defensive tackle? Wait a second. Isn’t Fletcher Cox already here, and isn’t Malik Jackson scheduled to return in 2020 following an injury he suffered in Week 1 of last season’s campaign that kept him out all year long?
Didn’t the Eagles extend Hassan Ridgeway who’s also injured that morning? Don’t Jackson and Fletcher Cox make $7 trillion between them? Did the Eagles really need to add another defensive tackle when they have needs at wide receiver, cornerback, linebacker and defensive end?
If we were grading solely on talent, Javon Hargrave‘s signing would earn an A-plus easily, but seeing as how Philly has so many other needs, we have to question the decision making. Philadelphia was expected to have $40 million at the beginning of the signing period, and almost immediately, they ate up $13 million of that with the addition of a guy who plays in a spot that, even without him being here, figured to be one of the strengths of an improved Eagles roster in 2020.
Philly won’t be worse with Hargrave in the fold. It would be ridiculous to say that, but they just missed an opportunity to really add a proven talent at another position. Grade: C
