Tremon Smith: Practice Squad

In a move that went unnoticed for the most part, the Eagles added Tremon Smith to their practice squad this past December.

More from Inside the Iggles

A former sixth-round pick in 2018, Smith was used mostly as a kickoff returner with the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers in his first two seasons. He is pretty tough to catch in space, evidenced by his 4.32 time in the 40-yard dash.

The Chiefs switched Smith to running back prior to 2019, but ended up switching him back to cornerback. He is also a former high school quarterback, and his speed has allowed him to be versatile over the last two years.

Unfortunately, the kick return is dying in today’s NFL and Smith’s skill isn’t nearly as appreciated as it was when star return man Devin Hester was around, but it can still be valuable.

Smith does not have much experience at cornerback and due to the pandemic, he won’t be able to show the Eagles what he has to offer until later on with offseason OTAs already canceled.

However, Smith can still be a valuable piece for the Eagles and could be used as a practice squad member on the scout team to imitate fast opponents to help prepare the Eagles each week.

In addition, maybe the Eagles will take a closer look at moving Smith back to running back.

Right now, the Eagles have Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Elijah Holyfield as their only rostered running backs.

Smith’s speed is valuable in today’s game with players like Julio Jones (4.34 40-yard dash) and Saquon Barkley (4.40) as notable stars of the league.

Philadelphia has done a good job of getting their quicker players into space like Scott (4.40), Darren Sproles (4.46), and even Nelson Agholor (4.42) during 2017 and 2018.

Whether Smith stays at cornerback or not, he can still be an important piece for the team and the Eagles should take a strong look at him in the preseason.

Smith might not have a spot at the back of the cornerback depth chart, but he is an intriguing option for the team to consider due to his electric speed.
