Did the Jags get someone the Philadelphia Eagles should have taken?

In the sixth round, with the 189th-overall selection, the Jacksonville Jaguars snatched Pac-12 quarterback Jake Luton. Does that sound familiar? That’s because Gardner Minshew II, Jacksonville’s projected starting quarterback for 2020, was drafted by them in the sixth round one year ago, and he was also a product of a Pac-12 program.

Luton won’t be expected to take on the same role that Minshew had to take on in his rookie season. He’ll have time to learn the new offense and adjust to the NFL level of competition. With the Eagles, Luton would’ve had time to develop as well, especially with Nate Sudfeld set to be the back up to start the year.

Luton’s college career definitely got off to an odd start. After committing to Idaho out of high school, things did not go as expected in his first two seasons, and he transferred to Ventura community college for the 2016 season.

In his first full collegiate season, he played in 11 games and finished with 3551 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions leading Ventura to an 8-3 record. He had five or more touchdowns in four games and racked up more than 350 yards in five games.
