4. player. 54. . . . Nathan Gerry has to be benched

The Philadelphia Eagles should put rookie Davion Taylor on the field.

It’s common knowledge that the Eagles don’t value the linebacker position. They haven’t invested a first-round pick on one since 1979 when they selected Jerry Robinson out of UCLA. Occasionally they’ve found one, but recently, the misses outweigh the wins.

It sounds easy enough, but watching Nathan Gerry play is a constant reminder of a formula that isn’t working. The Eagles selected him in the fifth round of 2017’s selection meeting with the intention of grooming him into a solid starter.

Gerry’s role on the defense has increased each season, and so has his production. After registering just five solo tackles and five total defensive snaps in his rookie year, he tallied 23 on 134 snaps in 2018. Last year, he saw a career-high, 78 tackles on 620 snaps. He also added five pass deflections and 12 starts to his resume.

Gerry hasn’t just regressed in 2020. He’s fallen off of a cliff. He’s been a liability in pass coverage. He played so poorly against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 that Eagles legend Seth Joyner called him out publicly. 2020 third-round pick, Davion Taylor, is waiting in the wings. Maybe it’s time to give him an opportunity to show what he has. Opposing quarterbacks have registered a perfect 153. 6 passer rating whenever passes thrown in his direction. Now, Taylor can’t do any worse than that, can he? He could end up being an upgrade that Philly is looking for.
