Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman finally discusses Carson Wentz
The saga continues for the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie quarterback.
It’s been an action-packed opening weekend to the 2021 calendar year, hasn’t it? The elation that followed two above-average performances by Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts has been replaced by the concern that came with two substandard showings in both Week 16 and Week 17.
Sure, there are things to get excited about. That was a nice toss to DeSean Jackson in Arlington, and he seemed to be in command of the offensive huddle as he led two more touchdown drives in Philly’s season finale, both punctuated by a couple of scores with his legs.
It may be a while before the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback dilemma plays out.
The Carson Wentz narratives won’t die though. Shortly after hearing that all of those rumors about him joining the Indianapolis Colts may be false and after hearing one of ESPN’s most controversial voices rip him for ‘pouting’, another story popped up, one by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that states 11’s relationship with head coach Doug Pederson might be beyond repair.
Oh, and did you notice? Once deactivated as a healthy scratch for the season finale, Carson Wentz’s support of Jalen Hurts seemed to die didn’t it? Who knows? Maybe he misplaced his Microsoft Surface Tablet with all that’s been going on.
In a sitdown with the media, Philly’s coach and general manager (Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman) addressed all of this and more, and here’s what Howie had to say about that ‘fractured relationship’.
"We have to come back at it and look at it with fresh eyes. We have to do a deep dive on every position. In terms of Carson, I don’t think it’s a secret that we moved up for him (in 2016) because (we believe in him)… When you have players like that, they’re like fingers on your hand. You can’t imagine that they’re not part of you, that they’re not here. That’s how we feel about Carson."
Don’t expect to hear anything about what the plan is for Wentz moving forward though as Roseman stated ‘That is not anything we’re talking about right now’ when asked about what we can expect to see in the handling of the man everyone thought would be the franchise signal-caller.
Now, there are two ways that you can look at this. One, there’s no reason to doubt anything that was said about how the leadership feels about 11. Then again, with how often we’ve all been lied to by this Eagles organization, it isn’t hard to have some reservations about anything Doug or Howie say anymore.
On the other hand, here’s another theory. If the decision going forward is to move on from Carson Wentz, a move that doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility or a foregone conclusion, that would explain all of the high praise that 11 continues to get publicly. After all, why would they bash someone they’re trying to trade and get considerable value for?
