Needless to say, the 2020 season was an ugly mess. The Philadelphia Eagles were a rollercoaster of a team last year. Between the injury issues that sidelined a handful of starters to the rumors of an apparent locker room rift. The Birds were a complete disaster in 2020.

While the start of the 2021 season hasn’t been much brighter, Philadelphia Eagles fans still have a few things to cheer about. One of those positives was this team saw the growth and surprise quality play of third-year linebacker Alex Singleton.

The six-foot-two and 240-pound rising star was a tackling machine in 2020. He stuck his head in on 120 total stops, and he was a game-changer, racking up five tackles for a loss of yardage, three sacks, and even a pick-six during a must-win primetime game.

The Philadelphia Eagles front office was tight to tender Alex Singleton.

Singleton made news when the Eagles front office had reportedly decided to tender the defensive leader as well as wideout Greg Ward and running back Boston Scott. While Singleton has yet to earn a long-term and high-dollar extension, the front office was right in holding on to the linebacker.

While his 2020 season was an eye-opener for fans, Philly is right in taking the slow route in making a long-term investment. Singleton had shown flashes in 2019, but nobody saw the giant step he took one year later coming or saw that he’d foster the output we saw as last year rolled on.

Alex Singleton could be the long-term answer for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Moving forward, you shouldn’t be surprised if you see the front office commit to Singleton long-term. He’s been a true leader on and off of the field as well as a tackling machine on a week-to-week basis. He has all the tools to be this team’s leading tackler on a year-in and year-out basis. He also has the skillset to be a potential superstar at the second level of Philly’s defense.

While the 2020 season was a great year for Alex Singleton, the Philadelphia Eagles fans are right to assume the linebacker will only get better. He has the sideline-to-sideline ability that coaches covet in their linebackers and the football intelligence to be one of the all-time greats in Philadelphia history (no, that isn’t a misprint).

While we will have to wait and see what comes for the linebacker, we can all hang our hats on something. The Eagles’ front office was right by keeping the young star around.
