Report says Philadelphia Eagles may pursue Deshaun Watson
Well, it’s safe to state that, at this point, none of us have any idea about what’s going on. In a span of about 24 hours (if that long), Philadelphia Eagles fans tossed ideas back and forth about whether or not Jacoby Brissett or Tyrod Taylor would be legitimate backup options on this roster.
That didn’t last long as they signed with other teams almost as quickly as everyone began stating that landing either of them might have been a legitimate option. Brissett signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Taylor wound up in Houston as a member of the Texans. Just like that, it appeared that Philly was on a path that was seemingly connecting them with a bad backup option.
The Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t actually be in play for Watson, would they?
Here’s what’s interesting about Taylor landing in Houston. He’s reportedly getting $12 million. Nobody pays that type of money for a backup normally, so immediately the questions about whether or not the Texans might move on from Deshaun Watson began.
Philly wouldn’t actually make a move on him, would they? They can’t make a move on him can they? With those financial constraints that we talked about all season? Well, seemingly, one of the NFL’s most trusted voices thinks it’s an option.
Here’s a quote from CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, who reported on March 16th that Watson to Philly could be a real possibility.
"Do not discount the Philadelphia Eagles as a strong suitor for Deshaun Watson. Too many sources with ties to ownership have whispered that sentiment my way for me to ignore, and the more you think about it, the more sense it makes. The more you wonder why you hadn’t explored the avenue sooner. The more you ponder why more isn’t being reported on this front because crazier things have happened in the league, by a long shot."
Stay tuned if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan. This is a story that may pick up some steam as we move through the coming days. We haven’t seen this side of his personality recently, but we know that Eagles executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman can be extremely aggressive when it comes to trades.
This isn’t something that’s been reported a lot up until now, but there have been whispers. With that being said, La Canfora is right. Too many people have said this for there to be nothing to the statement. Still, as is the case with everything else, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
