5 oldest NFL players to ever wear a Philadelphia Eagles uniform
Sam Baker, Philadelphia Eagles kicker/punter (1969)
Age: 39 years, 7.1 months
If only this type of versatility still existed. How much money do you think Sam Baker would make in the current NFL structure? He played in the NFL for 15 seasons during a career that began as a tailback/kicker hybrid.
Yes, you read that correctly. He rushed for 117 yards on 25 carries, caught four passes for 35 yards, and made 17 of 25 field-goal attempts for Washington in the same season (1956). If only the Eagles had gotten him sooner. Where in the heck are these guys now?
By the time his football journey led him to the Birds in 1966, his job functions had been altered some. No longer a tailback, although he did notch one rush for 15 yards in 1966, Baker appeared in 82 games as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, converting 205 of 213 extra points and 90 of 153 field goals for a total of 475 points.
He’s neither a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame or the Eagles Hall of Fame, but maybe he should be. This, ladies and gentlemen, was a football player. He even completed a pass, one that went for 58 yards in 1968.
Heck, maybe the Birds should have tried him out at wide receiver or safety. Something tells us that he would have excelled there too.
