October 28th of 1984… That’s how long it’s been since Harold Carmichael played his final game as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. It took 36 years for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s voters to finally give him his due and name him as a member of the 2020 class.

The question is what took so long? He’s one of those guys that, if you didn’t spend a ton of time thinking about it, you might just assume that he was already a member.

Obviously, some of us, admittedly, took a while to stop being bitter about the oversight, but Harold always dealt with those things with the utmost class. That was a lesson for us to handle our emotions in the same manner.

Harold Carmichael has always been a Hall of Famer in our book.

It was announced that Carmichael would join football’s immortals in January of 2020. Then came a global health pandemic, so his induction would have to wait. His response? “I’ve waited this long… Another year won’t hurt”.  Finally, he was enshrined and we heard his speech on August 7th of 2021. During the week leading up to Philly’s game versus the Washington Football Team, he finally got his rings.

Take a look at some of the tweets:

The numbers and accolades speak for themselves. He ended his career as a four-time Pro Bowler, a two-time Second-team All-Pro, and the NFL’s receiving yards leader and receptions leader for the 1973 season. He was also named the NFL’s Man of the Year in 1980.

Harold Carmichael is a member of the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team, the Eagles 75th Anniversary Team, and the Eagles Hall of Fame as well as a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame’s 1989 class, the Florida Sports Hall of Fame’s 2004 class, the SWAC Hall of Fame’s 2018 class.

Don’t forget about his induction into the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2020. Those are all accomplishments that speak to his greatness, but even had none of that happened, Harold Carmichael would have been a Hall of Famer in our book.

Fortunately, he is a Hall of Famer in everyone else’s as well. He’ll be honored at halftime of the Eagles game versus the Washington Football Team on December 19th. Hopefully, his team will salute him with a win.
