There are Hall-of-Famers, and there are guys like Merrill Reese. He’s been the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles since 1977 as their play-by-play announcer of game day radio calls. He was inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame in 2016 while still doing his job! How many people can say that? At this point, after a full to seasons to evaluate his development, it’s safe to say that Jalen Reagor probably won’t be joining him in the Eagles Hall of Fame.

We’ll get to Reagor in a second. Just hang in there.

At some point in all of our fandoms, we’ve rushed home to see an Eagles game and, in those instances where we were running a little late, we’ve turned on Merrill (and Mike Quick) to keep us abreast of what’s going on.

Heck, depending on who’s calling the game on television, some of us have found ourselves turning the sound down on those expensive 4K televisions we’ve bought so that we can turn Merrill and Mike on to listen to them instead.

Merrill Reese’s call on Jalen Reagor’s muffed punt is an all-time classic.

There’s no Eagles fan that doesn’t know this, but Merrill has seen a game or two by this Birds team over the years. What some may not know is, though he’s as classy as they come, he’s got what can only be described as a savage side to his personality.

In Week 17, he trolled the Washington Football Team without even saying a negative word about them. He skipped the trip to FedExField, a venue long seen as one of the NFL’s worst stadiums to, instead, call the game a couple of hours north of Philadelphia.

Two weeks later, he ethered Jalen Reagor with the call of Number 18’s muffed punt. Take a listen, especially if you elected to listen to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman call this one on the FOX broadcast.

We told you! Merrill will throw some shade or a jab in there from time to time. Don’t think that he won’t!

28 regular-season games of what might wind up being a short Eagles career are in the books for Jalen Reagor. He’s made 24 starts, and he’s hauled in 64 receptions on 11 targets, and that’s resulted in 695 yards and three touchdowns. In his first playoff game, he caught one pass for two yards, and his muffed punt resulted in a touchdown for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That totally flipped the momentum in Tampa’s favor and assured them of victory. Calling Reagor’s tenure in Philadelphia a failure would be a huge understatement.

Who are we kidding though? Why do we keep banging on Reagor for being bad and making mistakes when we know that we don’t have any reason to believe in him? Maybe we should spend more time rattling the cages of Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie and the Eagles’ coaching staff for continuing to put him out there so that he can continue to make a mockery of himself.
