We haven’t even reached Super Bowl Sunday yet, but you’ve watched the NFL long enough to know how things work. For every team that didn’t make the postseason and for every franchise that’s already been eliminated, the focus has already shifted to building towards the 2022-2023 regular season. Throw the Philadelphia Eagles in that category.

Shortly after Philly’s postseason ended with a one-and-done performance, several of the Birds players hung out with the media on Martin Luther King Day before vice president/general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni hung out with that same media for about 35 minutes during their season-ending press conference that came a day later. We’ve learned a lot.

Jalen Hurts has nothing to worry about seemingly. He will enter his third season as Philadelphia’s starter. Wide receiver Jalen Reagor‘s status isn’t as certain as his leash appears to be shorter. He’s been demoted in a sense on the wide receivers depth chart as Sirianni is now calling Quez Watkins Philly’s WR2.

Free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft will dominate Eagles-related headlines for the next couple of months, and rumors and theories are picking up. They range from D.K. Metcalf hitting the trade block to three potential free agents being linked to Philadelphia in a recent write-up.

NFL reporter links the Philadelphia Eagles to Jadeveon Clowney.

If you pay attention to the national NFL media, you’ve, no doubt, been keeping up with some of the trade and draft theories as well as the stars who are expected to hit the free-agent market come March. Philadelphia, a team with huge needs all over the roster, figure to see their names linked to a few. As a matter of fact, it’s already happening.

Katie Francis of ClutchPoints recently cooked up a piece on three impending free agents that make sense for the Eagles. Two of them we like: wide receiver Mike Williams of the Los Angeles Chargers and Mike Gesicki of the Miami Dolphins. The other guy we can do without, Jadeveon Clowney.

Once upon a time, Clowney was seen as a potential game-changer that was supposed to wreak havoc with JJ Watt on the Houston Texans defense for a long time. Now, he’s a journeyman. He’s seen three teams in his last three seasons after spending his first five in Houston. What’s more concerning than that is no one seems to want to commit to him for more than a year.

For years, we’ve been told that Clowney is a difference-maker. That’s part of the reason he keeps getting these huge deals. The problem is he isn’t that guy. There’s seemingly no evidence that having him on your team makes it better than it would be if he wasn’t.

Too often, he plays out of control. He’s seen as this elite pass rusher when he’s actually a better run defender, and the Birds need the former more than they need the latter.

light. Trending. Potential draft replacements for Rodney McLeod

Clowney is much too inconsistent to be given top-dollar. That’s what he feels he’s worth though, and you can’t knock him or his agent because teams keep giving him what he wants.

On the other hand, his inconsistency should serve as a red flag for a Philadelphia Eagles team with money to spend. He’s good. There’s no denying that. He wouldn’t keep getting these chances if he wasn’t, but for a team with so many needs and with so many pass rushers entering the draft and free agency, they need to look somewhere other than one of pro football’s more popular mercenaries.
