Eagles land on recent list of 15 offseason trades to watch out for
Another day passes, and another NFL writer adds fuel to the consuming fire birthed out of rumors of Russell Wilson‘s inevitable exit from the Pacific Northwest and the Seattle Seahawks organization. It seemingly hasn’t mattered what we’ve been told. No one seems to believe that the Philadelphia Eagles don’t have interest in seeing to it that he trades one bird’s nest for another.
Don’t look now, but anyone who’s tired of hearing that take won’t get any breaks from everyone’s favorite statisticians over at Pro Football Focus. Recently, Brad Spielberger dropped a few theories on 15 trades that he believes we all should look out for during the 2022 NFL offseason.
The Eagles’ perceived interest in Wilson led to both landing in a category he refers to as “QBs who may have changed their value and/or landing spot”. If you’ll remember, we were once told that Philly’s perceived interest in Russ may not have been reciprocated. We’ll see how things go, but for now, Spielbergerlikes the idea of Philly sending first-rounders in 2022 and 2023 as well as a third-rounder in 2022 to acquire Russell’s services.
Here’s what he offers as his theory on why this is a good idea.
"The Eagles try to follow the Los Angeles Rams’ precedent here with a similar value trade for Russell Wilson, who is the same age as Matthew Stafford and has a similar remaining contract as Stafford did last offseason… Mike Renner’s recent mock draft has Wilson headed to the Eagles, with the Seahawks hitting the reset button at quarterback. Philadelphia inherits a quarterback who earned over three wins above replacement on average from 2012 to 2020. When factoring in the first- and second-round picks the Eagles acquired from the Indianapolis Colts, they end up close to net even in a swap of Carson Wentz for Russell Wilson."
Some doubt whether or not they should be interested. Why wouldn’t they be though? They’re required to do their due diligence though, right?
The Eagles aren’t any closer to ending their dilemmas about Wilson or Hurts.
We know Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia’s current QB1 is gifted. We also know that the franchise has a legitimate reason to be concerned about whether or not they need to hand the keys over to him, so what gives?
Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl Champion who has succeeded in playing the game’s most important position at its highest level. Hurts can evolve into something even more special if allowed to grow, but other questions need to be answered.
Can Philly afford to allow some of their young stars to burn through their prime years for the sake of patience? Some say no, and that’s exactly why the dots between Philly and Wilson continue to be connected so often.
Like it or not, that’s where we are, and by the looks of things, that’ where we figure to remain until Russell Wilson lands in the City of Brotherly Love or some other NFL town. Until that happens, we won’t be putting any of this in our rear-view mirrors for good.
