. . Evan Mathis. 3. player. 54.

There may not be a better signing in Eagles history than Evan Mathis.

If Howie Roseman could somehow wave the magic wand one more time and get someone of Evan Mathis‘ skillset for a one-year deal worth $735K, he’d probably win the NFL’s executive of the Year Award after every NFL season.

Mathis landed with the Birds after the NFL ended a lockout in 2011. Keep in mind the fact that he was coming off of a three-year stay in Cincinnati with the Bengals in which he didn’t allow a single sack during his final two years there.

That one-year deal given to him by Howie turned into a five-year, $25 million contract extension, and from 2011 to 2014, he earned two Pro Bowl nods (2013, 2014), a First-Team All-Pro designation, and he helped solidify his place on the Pro Football Focus 2010s All-Decade Team after being their top-rated guard after the 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons. He was also named their second-best guard after the 2014 NFL season despite missing seven games due to injury.

You can’t go wrong with Mathis or Brandon Brooks, but whenever you land a guy four months short of 30 who had already been labeled as a journeyman and he turns out to be what Mathis turned out to be, it’s hard not to start throwing words around like genius.

Wait did we call Howie Roseman a genius? Okay, we got emotional there for a second. Let’s reel it back in and reveal the next name on the list.
