Eagles offense could play two series versus Jets on Friday (maybe)
It was a night to remember at Lincoln Financial Field. Jalen Hurts celebrated his 24th birthday with a nice showing during the Philadelphia Eagles‘ lone open practice of the summer. Plays were made on both sides of the ball. 30,000 Birds fans that were in attendance showered QB1 with love, singing “Happy Birthday” to him at the session’s conclusion. The highlight of the proceedings came earlier.
After scrambling for a touchdown during the first series on 11-on-11 drills, Hurts hit one of the newer Birds, A.J. Brown for a score over James Bradberry during the second. Might we see more of this during the Eagles’ first preseason game on Friday, August 12th versus the New York Jets?
There’s no way head coach Nick Siranni‘s going to play the starters right? Heck, he’s canceling practices during the offseason and telling his team that they can’t tackle at training camp!
Hold on though. He may have given us something.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni hints that the starters may see some action versus New York on Friday evening.
Prior to taking the field on Sunday, Sirianni sat with members of the media for a little under 15 minutes. When asked by Howard Eskin about a potential workload for the starters, Coach gave us the usual ‘word salad’. Here’s a quote.
"(We’re) still sorting through all that. We don’t have to make that decision until Friday. We’ll probably make it a little bit sooner than that, but still sorting through that. Last year we played them, I want to say two series each. We felt like that was a good formula. I’m not committing to that yet. But we’re still thinking it through at this time."
We love you Coach! Nick Sirianni has mastered the art of giving us plenty of information, and at the same time, saying nothing. Hey! We can’t get mad at him for that though. All we can do is listen and try to pull a few nuggets out when we can.
Here’s more. Look at these next two sentences very closely.
"Last year we played them, I want to say two series each. We felt like that was a good formula. I’m not committing to that yet, but we’re still thinking it through at this time."
Did you catch that? It appears w may see the starters after all. We wouldn’t place any wagers on it. Again, the game plan, so far this spring and summer, has been to get to Week 1 of the regular season healthy. Sirianni stated later that “where we are as a team today is going to change in the next three days” and that “we’re constantly in the business of getting better”, so the plan, for now, is to “see how things change in the next three days” and “take it one day at a time.”
That sounds like a long-winded way of bringing us full circle. We really don’t know any more now than we did before this conversation. We might see the starters, and we may not. Truthfully, no one should be shocked either way, but more importantly, here’s what we can say with confidence.
The Philadelphia Eagles have a game to play on Friday, and we can’t wait. The Birds are back, and it’s been a long time coming.
