Eagles are home to NFL’s fifth-highest adjusted salary cap number
Some of you who are younger Philadelphia Eagles fans won’t remember this, but once upon a time, Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. collaborated on a darn-good movie that has, honestly, stood the test of time. Almost 30 years later, Jerry Maguire is just as good as it was when we first saw it.
A 1996 American sports comedy-drama, one with a little romance sprinkled in, the Cameron Crowe film was inspired by the experiences of sports agent Leigh Steinberg (who also served as a technical consultant).
Steinberg was an agent for Tim McDonald during the 1993 NFL season when free agency was first introduced into the game. The film also gave birth to a phrase we’ve often associated with this time of year… “Show me the money!”.
Well, maybe we don’t say that as much now, but you get the idea. The movie was a big deal. It won a ton of awards, and there are still a few GIFs floating around. And, yes… It is, indeed time to show NFL stars the money.
The free agency frenzy looms, and the Eagles’ adjusted salary cap number for 2023 is now known.
Things are about to get interesting. On Monday, March 13th at noon EST, NFL teams can begin free-agency negotiations. The new league year begins on March 15th at 4 p.m. EST. The 2023 salary cap is set at a record $224.8 million base number per club.
Field Yates reports Philadelphia’s adjusted cap number is $234,685,422. That’s the NFL’s fifth-highest number. What that means is they carried $9,885,422 in rollover cap space and adjustments from last season into the coming campaign. They’ll operate under the adjusted cap number as opposed to the $224.8 million base number.
Here’s a look at all of the finalized year-end adjustments.
While having a higher salary cap than most of the NFL’s other franchises, we can still expect that most of Philly’s 20 impending free agents will play for new teams in 2023. Still, every additional resource helps. It will be intriguing to see how Howie Roseman uses the additional finances.
