Philadelphia Eagles 2023 mock draft 2.0: Free agency frenzy edition
The Philadelphia Eagles close the show with two solid depth pieces on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.
Former Gators standout Justin Shorter showcased both his sure hands and his physicality once he transferred to Florida after spending his first two seasons at the collegiate level with Penn State. As a fifth-year senior in 2022, Shorter was credited with zero drops and more than 550 yards receiving during each of his final two seasons in Gainsville.
Shorter isn’t short at all. He benefits from a six-foot-four and 223-pound frame that allows him to make physical catches, absorb hits, and box out covering defenders. Florida’s quarterback and a likely top-ten pick, Anthony Richardson crafted a passer rating of 84.3 in 2022. That rating rose to 93.3 when Richardson targeted Shorter.
Justin creates separation and makes contested catches when Florida needs it most. He was responsible for huge plays for the Gators like the following.
Shoter’s size, big play ability, and potential make him worth a draft pick and a spot on a 53-man roster. Zach Pascal is set to enter free agency. The Philadelphia Eagles would be a perfect fit for Shorter to work on developing his game to the NFL level. He has the physical tools and the experience of working with a talented mobile quarterback to make him a player that Howie Roseman would be excited to land in round seven.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ final pick in the 2023 NFL Draft comes at 248th overall, one they earned by trading Jalen Reagor to the Minnesota Vikings. Jonah Tavai is the younger brother of the New England Patriots’ Jahlani Tavai. He comes from a family where he also saw two of his other brothers spend time playing Division I college football.
Jonah is a player with tremendous upside. He led defensive tackle prospects with 100 or more snaps with 46 quarterback hurries and 10.5 sacks. He was also given a 92.2 pass-rush grade and an 87.9 run-defense grade by Pro Football Focus in 2022.
Tavai began his college career in junior college as a member of El Camino College’s football program. He was utilized as a starting defensive tackle and a few times as a goal-line running back. He earned six tackles for loss and three rushing touchdowns over ten games for his efforts.
Tavai’s slow start to his collegiate career and his six-foot, 290-pound frame make him a possible candidate that teams look to add post-draft, but the Eagles could get ahead of the curve. If they add an explosive and raw talent to their defensive line on Day 3, no one would really complain.
