Raise your hand if you played organized football at some point during your life. Keep those hands raised if you knew the dream of NFL stardom and one day playing for the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t extend past high school or, if you’re lucky, the time you spent enjoying that scholarship at the NCAA level. Keep those chins up. If any of this applies to you, rest assured that you aren’t alone.

For most of us, enjoying the camaraderie of the locker room is over, and from time to time, we spend our time dusting off those old trophies. Hey, it’s cool! Those Friday and Saturday night lights were fun while they lasted, but even though we’re all settled in those Plan Bs, football still holds a special place in our hearts. So do our Philadelphia Eagles.

We live vicariously through the legends. David Akers, Brandon Graham, Jason Kelce, and Fletcher Cox definitely qualify. Here’s something cool if you missed it. Akers recently tipped his cap to three Birds who are chasing his record.

David Akers shows love to three members of the Eagles’ core four as they chase history.

David Akers currently holds the franchise record for the most games ever played by a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Had Jason Kelce retired or had Brandon Graham left to play for another team, that record would have been safe.

As you’re aware, Kelce and B.G. announced prior to the start of the new league year that they’d return for another season. Since then, Fletch re-signed as well, and if Jason and Brandon can stay healthy, which for most of their careers, both have done, they’ll pass David in the record books as the longest-tenured Eagles in history.

That thought wasn’t lost on Philly’s superstation, 94 WIP-FM. They recently dropped a post on Instagram, and Akers tipped his cap to some fellow franchise legends.

We wouldn’t expect anything less. David has always been a class act. Just in case you’re keeping score, here’s where everyone stands in terms of total games played. How’s this for a top ten?

  • David Akers – 188
  • Brian Dawkins – 183
  • Harold Carmichael – 180
  • Brandon Graham -178
  • Jason Kelce – 176
  • Brent Celek -175
  • Fletcher Cox – 173
  • Chuck Bednaik -169
  • Tra Thomas – 166
  • Jon Dorenbos – 162

It doesn’t take a quick math study to deduce that, if B.G., Kelce, and Fletch play all 17 regular-season games this season, they’ll land as the top three names on this list with 195, 193, and 190 games played respectively. Something tells us that Akers will be the first to congratulate them.

It’s been quite the ride already. We’ll all be enjoying the show as it unfolds.
