player. 54. . . . Trey Sermon, running back. 34

Despite no real change in their roles, the additions of Rashaad Penny and Marcus Mariota might ensure we’ll never see Trey Sermon and Ian Book play.

Running back Trey Sermon landed with the Eagles last September and immediately found himself a fan club. That didn’t lead to a ton of playing time though, and despite Miles Sanders’ exit, the reacquisition of Boston Scott, the emergence of Kenneth Gainwell, and the signing of Rashaad Penny will probably lead us back to where we were last season… with Sermon being a healthy scratch on game days.

Some might argue that he’s a nice insurance plan if Penny has durability issues. That’s a good point; however, if the Birds draft a tailback or add one later this offseason, Sermon may be in danger of being released.

. . Ian Book, quarterback. 19. player. 54.

For a second, it felt like Ian Book might have a realistic shot at competing with whoever Philly brought in after losing Gardner Minshew. Then, Philly brought in Marcus Mariota.

Sorry about that, Ian.

He’s still the third-stringer, but with Marcus now on the roster, it feels like we’ll never see Ian on the field and competing in an Eagles jersey, except for the preseason games of course. And, what if the Birds add an undrafted guy? Things might get tricky then.
