Kevin Kolb was eventually seen as Donovan McNabb’s replacement, but that didn’t happen. Fate had other ideas.

Philly’s selection of Kevin Kolb was a bit of a surprise. Donovan McNabb was entrenched as the starter. Kolb was supposed to provide some insurance, but following an unexpected decline by QB1 and some positive signs by the new guy, Philly saw the need to make an unexpected but needed transition.

The new guy gave the Birds the confidence to move on from the old guy (and probably sooner than they expected). Stop us if any of this sounds familiar.

Sadly, however, the 2007 draft class didn’t provide much in the way of signal-callers. None of the ten QBs taken during the selection meeting amounted to much. Some had some memorable moments (Sam Bradford/Tim Tebow), but there were a lot of guys like Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, and, yes, Mike Kafka.

The Eagles drafted Kolb in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was the third quarterback taken after JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn.

The former Houston alum threw three passes for -2 yards in one appearance during his rookie season. He also lost a fumble in that one.

Kolb played six games in year two. One of which came during a Week 12 game when Andy Reid benched Donovan McNabb at the half of the game versus the Ravens. It didn’t go well. The highlight of that one was an interception thrown by Kevin right to Baltimore’s Ed Reed, who took that one 108 yards in the other direction for a score. Yikes!

Kolb started two games in year three, but he’s most remembered for stepping into the starting role after the Eagles traded McNabb to Washington during the 2010 offseason. Kolb open the new season as the man atop the depth chart, but he left his first game with a concussion.

Michael Vick stepped in, and though injuries and some reserve duty allowed Vick to see the field a handful of times, the direction of the Eagles franchise had changed again. Michael Vick was the starter now. Kolb was traded to the Arizona Cardinals on July 28th of 2011, but the decline had already begun.

He started five games for Arizona and signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2013, but following another severe brain injury sustained during a preseason game, he was placed on the injured reserve and was eventually released. In 2014, he retired due to post-concussion syndrome.
