NFL Draft grades: New York Giants

The New York Giants figure to conclude this season as they did the most recent, as the NFC East’s third-best team. Daniel Jones and the offense simply aren’t good enough, and even though this team is well-coached, we’re still scratching our heads about how Brian Daboll earned Coach of the Year honors for doing what we all knew he would, ending the season with the division’s third-best record.

Anyway, we digress… On to the draft picks.

2023 NFL Draft class

Deonte Banks, CB, Maryland (Round 1, Pick 25)
John Michael Schmitz, C, Minnesota (Round 2, Pick 57)
Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee (Round 3, Pick 73)
Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma (Round 5, Pick 172)
Tre Hawkins III, CB, Old Dominion (Round 6, Pick 209)
Jordon Riley, DT, Oregon (Round 7, Pick 243)
Gervarrius Owens, S, Houston (Round 7, Pick 254)

Best move: It took them a while, but they added some skill-position players

Jalin Hyatt slipped some. That was obvious, but by adding him when they did, the G-Men may have landed one of the NFL Draft’s steals. Time will tell, but at least Daniel Jones has someone to throw the ball to now.

Worst move: Waiting too long to add offensive skill players

Deonte Banks is a good player, but Joey Porter Jr. might be a tad better. Only time will tell, but just in case you’re curious, the latter came off the board eight picks later.

Meanwhile, much of the New York media is asking another question. Why did this team wait until Round 3 to begin adding skill players? Grade: B- (but trending toward a C)
