Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown is pretty much out the door, leaving the conversation rolling on whether DeVonta Smith is ready to be the number one guy.
There were concerns that, despite the latest trade for Dontayvion Wicks, fans might be nervous about him not being a replacement for Brown. ESPNÂ NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on 97.5 The Fanatic, where he was asked whether he had heard that there is a belief that Smith could replace Brown as the number one receiver.
"Well I definitely think that. I think DeVonta Smith is one of the, if not the most respected player within that organization. He's got widespread admiration, respect for how he handles himself, his toughness, and his talent. So, if A.J. Brown were not there, yes I believe that they believe that DeVonta Smith could be a one. Absolutely. I mean he's been a one anyway. He's been a one A. He's a one A. So, would he have an elevated role? That probably would be the case, yeah."
Adam Schefter believes DeVonta Smith is a number one receiver on the Eagles
Schefter is pretty much on point. Smith has always been the number one receiver, who has been covered up by Brown being there.
In three out of his five NFL seasons, Smith had over 1,000 yards in a season. Last year, he was the team's leading receiver for the first time since his rookie season in 2021 and since Brown's arrival, finishing with 1,008 yards.
Despite the transition the Eagles are going through with Brown's impending departure, Smith has all the skill sets to be one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. He has shown it over the years with his ability to make great catches on underthrows or in contested coverage.

Eagles fans are ready to see Smith unleashed in a Sean Mannion offense that will showcase how great he truly is.
