After the parade and other Super Bowl championship celebrations subsided, general manager Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles quickly got back to business.
Priority No. 1 was trimming player salaries, especially in future years.
Philly’s clear offseason direction left a large portion of last year’s championship roster playing elsewhere at the start of the new league year. Big-name players like Darius Slay Jr., C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Milton Williams, and Josh Sweat were either cut, traded, or allowed to walk in free agency as the Eagles prioritized opening opportunities for younger players over committing copious amounts of cash to established veterans.
The majority of the Eagles’ roster turnover came on defense, as aside from right guard Mekhi Becton and No. 2 running back Kenneth Gainwell, just about every notable player on that side of the ball returned.
But it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Philadelphia very publicly tried to trade tight end Dallas Goedert, who was due for a contract extension but wound up settling for a restructured, one-year deal instead.
Now 11 games into this 2025 season, Roseman might’ve been right for attempting to cut ties with his 30-year-old tight end early.
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert has mysteriously disappeared from the game plan
No one would have blamed Roseman and the Eagles for inking Goedert’s extension during their Week 9 bye this season, because the veteran was that good over their first seven games. He was among the NFL’s overall leaders in touchdown receptions at the time with seven, including a pair of two-score games in wins over the Buccaneers and Giants.
But it hasn’t taken long for the water to reach its level. Over Philly’s last four games, Goedert has been non-existent in the Eagles’ offensive game plan (and it hasn't always been his fault).

Goedert’s seen 17 total targets thrown his way over this latest four-game stretch, but has caught just 10 balls for 114 scoreless yards. He was, once again, nowhere to be found in the Eagles’ brutal loss to the Chicago Bears on Black Friday, amassing just 27 receiving yards; 22 of them came with the game out of hand — and the stadium 95 percent empty — in the fourth quarter.
With the way the Eagles are performing on offense right now, they can’t afford to have Goedert slowing down. He’s the only passable tight end the team has on its 53-man roster right now, as both Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson have struggled mightily as run-blockers. Making matters worse? Roseman currently has zero tight ends signed beyond this season.

Goedert looked to be heading towards a monster payday in free agency, and the Eagles were reaping all the short-term benefits. His trajectory has undoubtedly changed over the last month; however, while the team appears to be right in refusing his extension, it’s not shaping up to be a situation that helps the team over its upcoming stretch run.
