Eagles' $10 million weapon is forcing team into an impossible offseason decision

Good luck with that decision.

There have been some surprising performances on the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, but the one comeback story on the team has been remarkable to watch this season.

During the offseason, there was much speculation about the Eagles trading away tight end Dallas Goedert after another season of injuries, and they were set to pay him $14 million. Goedert ended up betting on himself and wanting to stay in Philly, so he took a pay cut that dropped his salary to $10 million.

Goedert has made the most of the opportunity with statistically one of the best seasons of his career and one of the best for a tight end in franchise history. He had caught 57 passes for 583 yards and 10 touchdowns (tied with Pete Retzlaff for the most touchdowns by an Eagles tight end in a season).

Has Goedert played his way to a new long term deal with the Eagles?

This season has certainly made things even more difficult for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman to decide on Goedert. It's been a year where the Tush Push hasn't worked, so Goedert has become the short yards option with the quick pitch catches for scores.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts clearly has a lot of trust in Goedert as he has become the third option in the passing game behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Goedert doesn't get as much attention as Brown and Smith do, but Goedert has been reliable, catching 75% of his targets on the season.

The problem is the Eagles have other players they need to prepare to pay in the next few years, including Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Reed Blankenship, and potentially more. There might not be a budget for Goedert to remain here.

Philly won't have any tight ends under contract entering free agency and could end up rebuilding the position in the offseason. Many think the best option for the Eagles is to draft a tight end in the NFL Draft, as it is a cheaper, more long-term option.

Goedert won't have to worry about not getting paid, though, as he should be one of the top free agent options out there at tight end in the offseason. Some team out there will pay for his services to be the featured tight end in the offense.

Eagles fans are enjoying the run Goedert has been on this season, but as for his future, it still looks iffy at best given the optics involved. That could change in a blink, though, so expect the unexpected.
