Eagles’ $30 million decision is now obvious (and it’s not about Jake Elliott)

Will he even be here in 2026?

At the beginning of the season, the Philadelphia Eagles fan base was screaming at general manager Howie Roseman to get some help at cornerback after the inconsistent play of Adoree' Jackson and Kelee Ringo on the outside.

Roseman heard those calls and made some to other NFL general managers to strike two big deals before the trade deadline. The Eagles traded for cornerbacks Michael Carter II from the New York Jets and Jaire Alexander from the Baltimore Ravens.

Philly fans know how well the Alexander trade has worked out, as he probably won't play a single game with the team ever. But what about Carter? He's actually played, so has he lived up to expectations?

Carter has been a non factor all season for the Eagles

There was only one time when Eagles fans saw Carter out in the secondary, but it wasn't for long. During the ugly 24-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Carter had to step in after Jackson got hurt as Cooper DeJean got moved to the outside, and Carter took over in the slot. That would be the only game all season for the Eagles in which Carter recorded a tackle.

That is not a typo. Carter has one tackle on the season for the Eagles in seven games with the team. He has been targeted just three times and allowed one catch for seven yards all year. Carter has 41 snaps on defense and 53 snaps on special teams.

Don't get this part twisted, Carter was a good move for the Eagles as they only gave up a Day 3 pick and moved wide receiver John Metchie III, who wasn't even doing anything for the team on offense anyway, so it wasn't a bad trade. Carter is even good to have as a depth player on the team.

The problem is that he isn't doing anything for the Eagles. He's just kind of....there. There was hope he would do more than rot away on the bench, but that's what has happened this season.

Roseman might have to make the decision to not bring back Carter after the season as he's really not doing much. The Eagles needed an outside corner, and Carter doesn't fit that bill.

Philly fans shouldn't expect Carter back next season unless the Eagles have plans for DeJean to be on the outside, but that doesn't seem to be an idea that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wants to do right now.
