Compared to the blockbuster trade that sent A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New England Patriots, Philly's Dontayvion Wicks trade was a relatively quiet move. The 25-year-old receiver never quite reached his electric potential in his three seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
In the Eagles' wide-open receiver room, he's set up to realize the breakout season the Packers never got the chance to see.
Wicks already looks like a potential star in Philadelphia.
Eagles WR Dontayvion Wicks is on track for the breakout the Packers wouldn't wait for
Wicks wasn't exactly set up for success in Green Bay. The Packers consistently had an overcrowded group of receivers, limiting each player's time on the field. In three seasons, Wicks never reached 75 targets, with his highest target share coming in at 16.38% in 2024. Green Bay preferred to rotate its receivers, typically using at least four wideouts at a high rate.
After his rookie season, it looked like Wicks was going to become a mainstay for the Packers. He finished second among qualifying rookies in 2023 with 14.9 yards per reception and fifth with 5.6 yards after the catch per reception. He was dynamic with the ball in his hands, offering big-play ability on every target.
But his path to production was always blocked by his teammates. While he had some struggles with inconsistency, Wicks was never set up for the breakout season that the Packers wanted from him.
It's a different story in Philadelphia. Wicks is the clear No. 2 wide receiver in the Eagles' offense. While rookie Makai Lemon will likely overtake him eventually, Wicks will get plenty of targets early in the season. DeVonta Smith will be the top option for Jalen Hurts, but the former Packers wideout will be a featured piece of the passing game.
He's familiar with Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, too. Mannion came to Philadelphia after working on Matt LaFleur's staff in Green Bay, where he worked closely with Wicks. The new OC knows how to get the most out of the receiver.

Wicks has shown that he can be explosive with the ball in his hands. Still, he has been more of an idea than a reliable force so far in his career. Now, he has the opportunity to prove his impact with a bigger sample size. Heading into a contract year, he has all of the motivation he needs to reach the breakout potential that the Packers never got to see him fulfill.
